Land acquisition approved for the 15.46 km metro-cum-elevated road corridor through Tambaram.
Enquire NowChennai's long-discussed plan to link the international airport with the sprawling Kilambakkam bus terminus, passing directly through Tambaram, has just cleared a significant procedural hurdle. The Tamil Nadu government has granted approval to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to initiate land acquisition and preparatory work for the long-awaited 15.46 km Airport–Kilambakkam elevated metro corridor.
The corridor itself is substantial in scope. The 15.46-km elevated metro corridor, estimated to cost around ₹9,335 crore, will feature 13 stations and connect several high-density residential, commercial, and transport hubs across South Chennai. Key proposed stations along the route include Chennai Airport, Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Perungalathur, Vandalur, Arignar Anna Zoological Park, and Kilambakkam Bus Terminus.
What makes this project distinctive is its double-decker design. Under the plan, the metro line would run on the upper level, while a four-lane elevated road would be constructed below to reduce congestion along the Grand Southern Trunk Road and improve connectivity towards Chengalpattu. This integrated approach is meant to tackle both rail and road congestion on one of Chennai's busiest arterial stretches in a single infrastructure push.
On the approvals front, an order issued by the Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Department on September 3 authorized CMRL to begin land acquisition, utility shifting, geotechnical investigations, and other pre-construction activities. Notably, the decision comes even as the state awaits final project approval from the Central Government, signalling that Tamil Nadu is keen to keep the project on track rather than wait for every clearance to fall in place sequentially.
For commuters, the payoff could be substantial. The project is expected to benefit an estimated 15 lakh commuters and ease travel along the busy southern corridor of the city. Officials associated with the plan have also spoken of cutting the airport-to-Kilambakkam journey down dramatically, with the corridor designed to connect the airport and the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus in a fraction of current road travel time.
Industry voices have welcomed the move. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, noted that "the Airport–Kilambakkam corridor is not just a metro extension—it's a vital urban connector." Such commentary reflects a broader sentiment among urban planners that the corridor addresses a long-standing gap: Tambaram's railway station, one of the oldest suburban rail junctions in the city, has never had direct metro access despite handling heavy daily footfall.
This corridor sits within Chennai Metro's larger Phase 2 ambitions. Chennai Metro Rail's Phase 2, valued at about Rs 61,843 crore, will add roughly 116 km of new lines across multiple corridors, with sections opening in phases from 2026 onwards. The Airport-Kilambakkam line is one of the more advanced pieces of this expansion, having moved past the DPR and into the land-acquisition stage while sister corridors elsewhere in the city remain at earlier planning stages.
For homebuyers and investors, the implications are straightforward. Localities along the GST Road belt — Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Perungalathur and Vandalur — stand to gain direct rail connectivity to both the airport and the region's largest bus terminus once this line is operational. SOBHA's established presence in this southern Chennai corridor, including ready homes near Pallavaram, positions buyers to benefit from the infrastructure upgrade as it progresses toward central approval and eventual construction.
