Thane Ring Metro Construction Begins

Work has officially commenced on the ambitious Thane Internal Ring Metro, a high-priority project jointly funded by the Central and State governments. The first phase of construction has begun in the Ghodbunder area, marking a significant milestone in addressing the city's burgeoning traffic woes.

The Thane Ring Metro is an under-construction 29 km ring-shaped metro system for Thane, being built by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha-Metro) across 22 stations. Approved by the Union Cabinet in August 2024, the ₹12,200 crore project will be executed by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro). Of its 22 stations, two are to be underground on a 3 km section, with the rest elevated.

The Traffic Relief Story

Thane continues to struggle with severe traffic congestion, particularly in the Ghodbunder Road corridor, Old Thane, and Wagle Estate regions. The city is heavily dependent on both rail and road networks for daily commuting, but key residential and rapidly growing areas such as Ghodbunder and New Thane remain located far from the suburban railway network. Once operational, the Ring Metro is projected to reduce travel time by up to 50–75 per cent for many intra-city routes and ease road congestion on major arteries like Ghodbunder Road and the Eastern Express Highway.

Project Scope & Timeline

The 29-kilometre metro corridor will form a loop around the western side of the city, connecting key residential, business and transport hubs such as Wagle Estate, Manpada and Thane Junction. Civil construction has begun in Ghodbunder (April 2026). The Kalpataru–HG Infra JV holds a ₹1,415 crore EPC contract, and a ₹223.7 crore station package for 6 elevated stations is under bid evaluation. Civil construction has begun in the Ghodbunder area, with the line expected to open around 2029.

What This Means for Homebuyers

The under-construction properties in Thane have witnessed notable price appreciation, especially on Ghodbunder Road and Kolshet. Mid-segment localities such as Kasarvadavali, Kolshet, Balkum, etc., continue to have steady appreciation due to increasing housing demand and the upcoming Metro. Property prices within a 1 km radius of metro stations have seen a 15-20% jump in the last 2 years, and this is expected to increase further.

Implementation Challenges

While transformative, the project faces hurdles. The Thane Municipal Corporation recently sanctioned the felling of 3,000 trees, sparking concerns among environmentalists. Authorities have cautioned citizens that as excavation begins on narrow internal roads, significant traffic diversions and bottlenecks are expected.

Despite temporary disruptions, once completed, Thane is poised to become the first city in Maharashtra to have its entire urban expanse linked via a metro system.
