Blue Line Delay: What's Really Happening on the Silk Board-KR Puram Stretch

Bengaluru's Namma Metro Blue Line, long pitched as the game-changer for Outer Ring Road commuters, is running behind schedule once again. Bengaluru's Namma Metro Blue Line is unlikely to open for commercial services by the end of 2026, with unfinished civil and systems works pushing the proposed launch into 2027. The delay could extend until the middle of next year, according to a Times of India report.

The stretch in question, Phase 2A, is the 13-station elevated line running along the ORR between Central Silk Board and KR Puram. The nearly 19 km corridor between KR Pura and Silk Board is being built along the Outer Ring Road (ORR), connecting several major technology and employment hubs. This is the segment homebuyers and IT professionals across Bellandur, Marathahalli, Panathur and Kadubeesanahalli have been tracking closely, since it directly serves the densest office corridor in the city.

What's holding things up? The bottleneck is concentrated at the Central Silk Board end. At Central Silk Board, delays in obtaining permissions and clearing sites affected viaduct construction. The remaining structure is important for train reversal, while drainage works have also slowed progress. Adding to the wait, a travellator linking the Blue Line station with the operational Yellow Line station is still at the tendering stage.

BMRCL hasn't abandoned its near-term milestones entirely. BMRCL had previously aimed to begin operations this year and was targeting trial runs between KR Pura and HSR Layout by October. A senior BMRCL official said the agency was continuing to work towards the trial-run milestone but acknowledged that the commercial launch would have to be deferred.

Zooming out, the broader Blue Line project (Phase 2A plus the airport-bound Phase 2B) is making visible headway. Namma Metro's Blue Line construction has crossed 72% completion in Bengaluru, and the 58.19-kilometre corridor will connect Central Silk Board with Kempegowda International Airport via KR Puram, Hebbal and Yelahanka. The 58.19-kilometre corridor, being developed at an estimated cost of ₹14,788 crore, is expected to provide a crucial high-speed connection, with the entire route targeted to become operational by the end of 2027.

This isn't the corridor's first missed deadline. The Blue Line, whose construction began in September 2021, was touted to open by June 2026. The repeated slippage has drawn political attention too — in December 2025, Deputy CM D K Shivakumar issued a stern message to contractors after inspecting work at Kodigehalli, warning of consequences if committed timelines were not met.

Traffic on the ORR itself is set to get busier before it gets better. The delay comes as the Greater Bengaluru Authority plans Rs 450 crore of white-topping work on the ORR from October 2026 to January 2027. Commuters and residents near Bellandur, Panathur and Marathahalli should factor in overlapping construction disruption over the next several months.

For homebuyers evaluating property along this stretch, the practical takeaway is patience paired with due diligence. Metro proximity claims in project brochures deserve scrutiny — metro station catchment areas in Bangalore typically extend roughly 800 metres to 1 km along the walking radius. Projects genuinely close to upcoming stations like Kadubeesanahalli will benefit meaningfully once trains run; those relying on distant connectivity claims may see less real-world upside. The fundamentals along the ORR corridor — IT employment density, social infrastructure and established developer presence — remain strong regardless of the metro's exact opening date.

Questions, Answered

What exactly is Phase 2A of the Bangalore Metro Blue Line?
Phase 2A is the elevated stretch of the Blue Line running along the Outer Ring Road between Central Silk Board and KR Puram, covering close to 19.75 km with 13 stations connecting major IT and employment hubs.
When will the Silk Board-KR Puram metro stretch actually open?
BMRCL had targeted late 2026, but officials now indicate the commercial launch is likely to slip into 2027 due to pending civil and systems work, particularly around Central Silk Board.
Why has this stretch of the Blue Line been delayed?
Permission delays and site-clearance issues at Central Silk Board have held up viaduct construction needed for train reversal, and drainage works have added to the slowdown. A travellator connecting the Blue Line and Yellow Line stations is also still at the tendering stage.
Are trial runs happening on this corridor?
BMRCL had targeted trial runs between KR Puram and HSR Layout by October 2026. Officials say they are still working toward this milestone even as the full commercial launch gets pushed back.
How much of the overall Blue Line project is complete?
As of recent reports, construction across the full 58.19 km Blue Line corridor (Silk Board to Airport) has crossed 72% completion, with civil works, track-laying and signalling progressing simultaneously.
Will ORR road work add to commute troubles during this delay?
Yes. The Greater Bengaluru Authority has planned Rs 450 crore of white-topping work on the ORR between October 2026 and January 2027, which will overlap with ongoing metro construction in the same corridor.
Should I trust metro proximity claims when buying property along ORR?
Be cautious. Real metro catchment benefit typically extends only about 800 metres to 1 km on foot from a station, so it's worth verifying actual walking distance rather than relying on straight-line distance claims in project marketing.
What is Phase 2B, and when will it open?
Phase 2B is the 38-plus km extension from KR Puram to Kempegowda International Airport via Hebbal and Yelahanka. It is currently targeted for completion by December 2027, later than the Silk Board-KR Puram stretch.
Has BMRCL missed deadlines on this project before?
Yes. Construction on the Blue Line began in 2021 and was originally expected to open by June 2026; that date has since moved multiple times, most recently toward 2027.
What should homebuyers along the ORR corridor do while waiting for the metro?
Focus on the fundamentals that hold regardless of the metro timeline — existing IT employment density, social infrastructure, road connectivity and developer track record — rather than timing a purchase purely around a metro launch date that keeps shifting.
