Swargate-Katraj Underground Metro: Where Construction Stands Today

Pune's long-awaited underground metro extension connecting Swargate to Katraj has entered a decisive construction phase. Work on the extended Pune Metro Phase-1 corridor from Swargate to Katraj, set to become a major milestone in the city's public transportation system, is progressing rapidly, with casting of the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) segments beginning on 12th May 2026. These specially designed concrete segments will be installed by the TBM during tunnel construction to strengthen and support the underground tunnel structure, marking a visible shift from paperwork to precast concrete on the ground.

The corridor itself spans 5.463 km of twin tunnels and five underground stations—Market Yard, Padmavati, Bibwewadi, Balajinagar, and Katraj, extending the existing Purple Line south from its current Swargate terminus. The route was originally planned with only three stations, but Balajinagar and Bibwewadi were added later to improve accessibility for nearby residential areas and reduce the distance between stations, reflecting public demand for denser coverage across south Pune's residential belt.

Getting here took time. The Union Cabinet approved the Pune Metro Phase-1 extension towards south from Swargate to Katraj at a cost of around three thousand crore rupees in August 2024, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the extension in September that year. Actual construction, however, was delayed due to the shortlisting of the contractor and the addition of new stations along the route, and it was only in late 2025 that Pune Metro issued a formal work order to the contractor to mobilise on site. With the addition of Bibwewadi and Balajinagar, the total project cost has risen from ₹2,954 crore to ₹3,637 crore, with the Pune Municipal Corporation increasing its own contribution from ₹181 crore to ₹250 crore to help fund the expanded scope.

On the ground, construction has moved from planning into active excavation. Maha Metro has started digging shafts that will be used to lower Tunnel Boring Machines into the ground, with four TBMs to be deployed gradually over the next few months while station building and tunnelling happen simultaneously. The first excavation work began at the busy Market Yard station, and traffic management around the proposed station areas at Market Yard and Bibwewadi has since been systematically rerouted, with Pune Metro and PMPML jointly coordinating BRTS lane diversions along Satara Road to keep bus and vehicle traffic moving during the works.

Maha Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar, who formally inaugurated the tunnel segment casting, called the corridor extremely important for the citizens of Pune, noting that the start of casting work reflects steady progress, with the stated objective being to complete construction within the stipulated timeline while maintaining high standards of quality and safety. The corridor overall is expected to be completed by February 2029, giving south Pune a fully underground metro link within Pune Metro Phase-1's broader public transport network.

For residents, the payoff will be direct. The corridor will benefit commuters from Bibwewadi, Balaji Nagar, Dhankawadi and Padmavati, connect to Market Yard, one of the city's largest wholesale markets, and at Katraj link with the PMPML bus depot, Katraj-Kondhwa Road, and the Katraj Bypass leading to the Mumbai-Bangalore highway. That kind of connectivity typically reshapes buyer preference in a city like Pune, where metro proximity has already driven price appreciation along the operational Purple and Aqua Line stretches.

South Pune's residential corridor around Kondhwa, NIBM Road and Bibwewadi has been building density for years, and a functioning underground metro link only adds to that trajectory. SOBHA's own footprint in this part of the city includes Sobha Orion, a project on NIBM Kondhwa Link Road offering 1 and 2 BHK apartments, an area that sits within easy reach of the upcoming Bibwewadi and Balajinagar stations. As construction on the Swargate-Katraj stretch accelerates through 2026, homebuyers evaluating south Pune would do well to track station-wise progress alongside project delivery timelines in the surrounding micro-markets.

Questions, Answered

What is the Swargate-Katraj metro corridor?
It is a 5.46 km fully underground extension of Pune Metro's Purple Line (Phase-1), connecting the existing Swargate terminus further south to Katraj. It will have five underground stations: Market Yard, Bibwewadi, Padmavati, Balajinagar, and Katraj.
When did construction actually begin on this corridor?
The foundation stone was laid in September 2024, but on-ground work order issuance faced delays due to contractor selection and station additions. Active construction, including shaft digging and tunnel segment casting, picked up pace through 2026, with the first TBM segment casting starting on 12th May 2026.
How many stations will the extension have and why did the number change?
The corridor was initially approved with three stations—Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj—but Balajinagar and Bibwewadi were later added to improve accessibility for nearby residential areas and reduce inter-station distances, bringing the total to five.
What is the current construction status as of mid-2026?
Maha Metro has begun digging shafts to lower Tunnel Boring Machines and cast the first precast tunnel segments. Excavation has started at Market Yard station, with four TBMs to be deployed gradually while station construction and tunnelling proceed in parallel.
What is the total cost of the Swargate-Katraj metro project?
The project cost has risen from an initial ₹2,954 crore to ₹3,637 crore following the addition of the Bibwewadi and Balajinagar stations, with the Pune Municipal Corporation increasing its contribution to ₹250 crore to help cover the added scope.
Will construction disrupt traffic on Satara Road and around Market Yard?
Yes, temporary BRTS lane diversions and rerouted bus stops have been introduced near Market Yard and Bibwewadi to accommodate station shaft construction. Pune Metro has deployed signage and traffic marshals, and since the line is fully underground, most disruption is localized to station construction zones.
When is the Swargate-Katraj corridor expected to be completed?
The project is targeted for completion by February 2029, extending the operational Purple Line network from Swargate deeper into south Pune.
Which areas of south Pune will benefit most from this metro extension?
Bibwewadi, Balaji Nagar, Dhankawadi, Padmavati, and Katraj are expected to see the most direct connectivity gains, along with better access to Market Yard market and the Katraj bus depot linking to the Mumbai-Bangalore highway.
How does this metro corridor affect property values in south Pune?
Metro connectivity has historically driven steady price appreciation along Pune's operational corridors, and areas like Kondhwa, NIBM Road, and Bibwewadi are positioned to benefit as the underground line nears stations in these localities.
Does SOBHA have projects near the Swargate-Katraj corridor?
Yes, SOBHA has a residential presence on NIBM Kondhwa Link Road through Sobha Orion, an area within reasonable distance of the upcoming Bibwewadi and Balajinagar metro stations.
